Complete Boat Maintenance Checklist 2026: Seasonal Guide
Chicago's boating season runs from May through October, with peak months June through September. Proper maintenance before, during, and after the season keeps your boat running safely and protects your investment. This checklist covers everything from spring commissioning at Chicago's marinas to fall winterization.
Spring Commissioning Checklist
- Engine oil and filter: Change oil and filter before the first launch. Use manufacturer-recommended marine-grade oil. For outboards, also change the lower unit gear oil
- Fuel system: Inspect fuel lines for cracks or swelling. Replace fuel filters. If fuel sat over winter with stabilizer, it should be fine — without stabilizer, drain and replace
- Battery: Charge fully and load-test. Marine batteries typically last 3-5 seasons. Replace if voltage drops below 12.4V under load. Clean terminals with baking soda solution
- Hull inspection: Check for cracks, blisters, or osmosis. Sand and repaint bottom paint if needed — critical for boats kept in Chicago's freshwater marinas to prevent zebra mussel growth
- Safety equipment: Check expiration dates on flares (3 years), fire extinguishers, and first aid kit. Verify PFDs are in good condition — one per passenger plus a throwable Type IV device, required by Illinois law
- Electronics: Test GPS, fishfinder, VHF radio, and navigation lights. Update charts if applicable. The Chicago Harbor area channels 16 and 12 should be programmed into your VHF
Mid-Season Maintenance
Every 50 hours of engine operation or monthly during the Chicago boating season, check these items:
- Engine oil level and color (dark or gritty = change it)
- Coolant level (closed-cooling systems)
- Belt tension and condition
- Bilge pump operation — test the float switch
- Propeller for nicks, dings, and fishing line wrapped around the shaft
- Zincs/anodes — replace when 50% eroded. Lake Michigan's freshwater is less corrosive than saltwater but zincs still matter
Fall Winterization (Chicago)
Chicago winters are brutal on boats. Freeze damage from sub-zero temperatures can crack engine blocks, manifolds, and plumbing. Winterize by late October at the latest.
- Engine: Fog cylinders with fogging oil. Drain all water from the cooling system. Fill with marine antifreeze rated to -50°F (Chicago regularly hits -10°F to -20°F)
- Fuel: Fill tank to 95% to prevent condensation. Add fuel stabilizer (Sta-Bil Marine). Run engine 10 minutes to circulate treated fuel through carbs/injectors
- Plumbing: Drain freshwater tank, water heater, and all lines. Pump non-toxic antifreeze through the entire system including the head
- Storage: Chicago indoor storage runs $30-$60/foot for the season (November-April). Outdoor storage with shrink-wrap is $15-$30/foot. Popular facilities include Crowley's Yacht Yard, Burnham Harbor, and Montrose Harbor dry stack
